U 74. minuti Gvardiol se ubacio iza leđa marokanske obrane, dobio je odličnu loptu u prostor, ali prilikom dodavanja ga je Sofyan Amrabat udario po lijevoj nozi. Naš je branič pao, a igra se nastavila minutu-dvije. Kad je uslijedio prvi idući prekid, Vatreni su opkolili suca Al Jassima, koji im je pokazao da je na liniji s VAR sobom. Poslije kratkotrajnih konzultacija signalizirao je da ne misli svirati penal, odnosno da se igra dalje.
Odmah nakon takve odluke na društvenim mrežama uslijedile su brojne reakcije. Ljubitelji nogometa sa svih strana svijeta nisu mogli vjerovati da nije dosuđen jedanaesterac za Hrvatsku.
